Preliminary investigation by Trooper Dustin Eggert and MCI Wanda Clay revealed that two semi trucks were westbound on I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road) at the 21.2 mile-marker. A maroon 2007 Volvo, driven by Christopher Johnson of Indiana and owned by Illini State Trucking Co., was unable to stop for slowed traffic. This vehicle then rear-ended the left side of a black Freightliner, driven by Dieuseful Cajuste of Florida. The Freightliner is owned by King Logistics Inc.
The initial impact resulted in the Volvo then swerving across the lanes and sideswiping a guardrail. Both drivers were transported for non-life-threatening injuries. The Freightliner's trailer was hauling food which was not damaged. The Volvo's trailer was empty. The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours for cleanup of the scene.
