A new historic plaque at The American Factory now recognizes the campus on the National Register of Historic Places, a designation from the National Park Service honoring places that shaped American history.
The story here begins in 1866, when a three-story brick woolen mill rose along the Lincoln Highway during a period of rapid national expansion. That original structure still defines the site today, even though it is no longer standing. To preserve the historic integrity of the campus, no building on the property can exceed the height of that first mill. For visitors, the still house offers a visual reference point for that original scale. This requirement even shaped the design of the distillery itself. The still had to be specially engineered to fit within the historic height limits, a modern piece of craftsmanship built to honor the past.
From 2019 to 2023, Journeyman Distillery restored the long-vacant campus with care, preserving its character while adapting it for new life. Today, the revitalized American Factory continues its legacy of makers, industry, and community gathering
Next time you visit, take a moment to find the plaque and read the story it tells, one of preservation, ingenuity, and a future rooted in craftsmanship.
