When walking, jogging, or riding your bike, always be aware of your surroundings at all times. Scan back and forth and take frequent looks behind you to make sure that you are not being followed. Walk with a relative when possible.
Avoid walking at night and through areas where you cannot get help right away.
Avoid being distracted by use of earbuds or your cell phone while you are walking or working in the yard. Continue to remain alert and aware of your surroundings.
If you see someone acting suspiciously in your path, go a different direction and attempt to get to a safe place that is occupied by others. Trust your instincts and do not panic. If you have a cell phone, call 911 right away to provide your location and to report the individual and their behavior to police.
Consider carrying a whistle to alert distress, or carry pepper spray (and have it ready) to use when you are walking or jogging. Remember to shout or scream when you feel threatened.
If you work alone, set up a way for a relative or co-worker to call and check on you periodically, and make sure to advise them to call 911 if they cannot get a hold of you so that a welfare check can be done.
When you are walking out to your car after shopping or working, call 911 to request a police officer to stand by in the parking lot if you are feeling uneasy about walking out to your car.
