Residents are encouraged to read, make note of, and share these safety tips in regards to promoting personal safety and situational awareness with your friends, family, and neighbors:

 Always be aware when you are pulling in or out of your driveway. Look around the area of your garage before pulling in and look at your rear view mirrors to check for any suspicious individuals before closing your garage and exiting your vehicle. Beware of individuals who may be hiding behind garbage cans or other items.

 When at gas stations or pulling up to enter businesses, NEVER leave your vehicle running or with the keys inside. Scan the area to check for suspicious individuals who may be sitting in parked vehicles off to the side, especially if they are running. When getting ready to pump gas, be aware of individuals who could be sneaking up to the passenger side of your vehicle to either enter your vehicle or steal valuables. Sit inside of your locked car while the fuel is being dispensed and continue to scan the area while you are at the business.

 Always try to park in well-lit areas when possible that are visible to the public, and make it a habit to start your car and drive away immediately when possible.

 Consider carrying pepper spray and having it out and ready to use when necessary. Always aim for the eyes and nose area. Please remember that pepper spray may not affect everyone.

 Do not stop for stranded motorists who you do not know. Call 911 to get help on the way for them.

 If someone bumps the back of your vehicle while driving, continue to proceed to a safe area in view of the public if your vehicle is driveable and call 911 on the way there to get the police enroute. If the vehicle drives away, attempt to read its license plate if it’s safe to do so and report it immediately.

 Try to bike, walk, jog, or shop with a family member when you can as criminals may be more likely to approach someone who is alone. Look out for each other while in parking lots. If you do not feel safe walking out to your car, you can call 911 to request that an officer stands by in the parking lot.

 Avoid walking alone at night or sitting inside vehicles in dark areas. Keep the connecting door between your garage and residence closed and locked when taking out trash or working in the yard.

 Keep your cell phone in your pocket or jacket in the unfortunate event that your vehicle is stolen so that you can call 911 for assistance. Always report suspicious individuals immediately to police.
