
The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) will hold a 21-day public comment period on an amendment to the 2026-2030 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The comment period begins January 2 and will end on January 23, 2026. Amendment #26-04.1 contains:
For INDOT – 4 Projects:
- 1 Pavement/Roadway Rehabilitation Project; Maintenance – Increase funding, revise between fiscal years
- 1 Sign Project – Repair/Replacement – district-wide; new project
- 1 Small Structure Repair/Lining/Replacements – new project)
- 1 Other Type Project – Welcome Center Reconstruction (add new funding source, revise funding between phases)
For locally sponsored projects – 6 Projects for the municipalities of Gary (1), Griffith (1), Hobart (1), La Porte County (1), Long Beach (1), and Porter (1):
- 1 Road Relocation Study
- 3 Other Type projects (Zero/Low Emission Vehicle Purchase [two new projects, one project elimination])
- 1 ADA sidewalk/pedestrian projects (increased funding)
- 1 Roadway Safety Project (eliminating)
NIRPC’s TIP is a short-range financial and spending plan for the utilization of federal transportation funding and for regionally significant projects. These federal funds can be used for highway, transit, and non-motorized transportation projects. NIRPC's TIP includes projects undertaken by municipalities, counties, transit operators, and the State of Indiana. Federal planning regulations guide the preparation and development of the TIP documents. All comments received during the 21-day public comment period will be compiled into a public comment report and responded to. This report will be made available to the public and distributed to the relevant NIRPC committees prior to any action on these items. It is anticipated that action will be taken at the February 3, 2026, meeting of the Transportation Committee, followed by the February 19, 2026, meeting of the NIRPC Commission.
