During the week of September 22-26, K-9 Officer Brad Riemerts, who also serves as the School Resource Officer at Munster High School, participated in a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training with other area officers and community members at the Highland Police Department.
CIT is an intensive course for law enforcement officers designed to improve their response to people experiencing a mental health crisis by teaching de-escalation skills, mental illness basics, and local resource connections. The goal is to enhance safety and to foster collaboration between law enforcement, mental health professionals, and their families.
Officer Riemerts joins a number of our other officers who have participated in this important safety training. Our new licensed social worker, Jessica Sternberg, also assisted with this program as well during the past week.
Thank you to all of the instructors and to the Highland Police Department for hosting the training.
