Lake County- On October 21, 2025, at approximately 10:45 AM, troopers from the Indiana State Police Lowell District responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-80 eastbound near the 6.4 mile-marker. This location is approximately 1.4 miles east of Cline Avenue in Gary, Indiana.
Initial investigation by Trooper Regen Smith revealed that a white sedan was changing lanes in front of a semi tractor trailer while driving eastbound on I-80. The rear left side of the white sedan made contact with the front right side of the semi during the lane change. This collision caused the white sedan to spin all the way around before it crashed into the concrete media barrier. After the collision with the concrete barrier, the white sedan bounced back into the lanes of travel and crashed into another sedan and a separate semi. This second semi “t-boned” the white sedan and came to a stop in the lanes of travel after the crash.
The driver of the white sedan was unresponsive after the crash. One of the other drivers involved in the crash began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the unresponsive driver. When Trooper Smith arrived on scene, she began performing CPR and later used an automated external defibrillator (AED). Trooper Smith continued to perform life saving measures until an ambulance arrived and emergency personnel took over.
The driver of sedan was transported to Northlake Hospital in Gary where she was pronounced deceased. Family has been notified; however, the Lake County Coroner will be releasing further information this afternoon.
