Troopers from the Indiana State Police Lafayette District conducted targeted enforcement patrols on Friday and Saturday focusing on aggressive and reckless driving as traffic increases during spring break travel. The patrols were concentrated along Interstate 65 and Interstate 74, two major corridors that experience a significant increase in traffic volume during this time of year.

The goal of the enforcement effort was to increase visibility, deter dangerous driving behavior, and enhance roadway safety for those traveling through the Lafayette District.

During the patrols, troopers recorded the following activity:

  • 223 traffic stops
  • 25 additional calls for service
  • 5 crash investigations
  • 5 drug-related charges
  • 3 operating while intoxicated (OWI) arrests
  • 2 reckless driving arrests
  • 2 suspended drivers
  • 1 vehicle pursuit

One of the incidents included a vehicle pursuit that began after a driver fled from a traffic stop on Interstate 65. Troopers were able to safely bring the pursuit to an end by utilizing a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT), taking the driver into custody without further incident. The Indiana State Police would like to thank our local law enforcement partners for their assistance and continued commitment to working together to keep our communities safe. Additional details regarding that incident can be found in a previously released Indiana State Police press release.

“These targeted patrols are about keeping Hoosiers and those traveling through our state safe,” said Lt. Tom McKee, Lafayette District Commander. “With increased traffic on our roadways, our troopers were out proactively addressing those violations to reduce crashes and keep our roadways safe.”

Motorists are reminded that troopers will continue to patrol heavily traveled roadways throughout the remainder of spring break. Drivers are encouraged to obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions, allow proper following distance, and never operate a vehicle while impaired.

The Indiana State Police encourages all motorists to plan ahead and make safe driving decisions to help ensure a safe and enjoyable travel period for everyone.
