As the trooper caught up to the violator, the driver made several unsafe lane movements. After activating the police lighting, the vehicle voluntarily pulled over near the 6.1 mile-marker. While speaking with the male driver, Trp. Griffin detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver’s breath. Further investigation led to the driver submitting to and failing field sobriety tests. A certified chemical test for intoxication was administered at the Lake County Jail. The driver failed this test registering .09% BAC (Blood Alcohol Content). The legal limit in Indiana is .08%. The driver was then booked into the Lake County Jail.
During an inventory of the vehicle, a Glock 34 9mm handgun with a 50 round drum magazine was located under the front seat. The magazine was loaded with 47 rounds of ammunition. Two additional 30 round magazines were also located inside the vehicle. A records check showed that the driver did not have an Indiana or Illinois handgun permit. Also located during the inventory were 29 credit cards (MasterCard), all belonging to different named individuals.
The suspect has been identified as Darrius D. William Allen, 31, from Harvey, IL. He has been preliminarily charged with the following:
- Forgery- Level 6 Felony
- Identity Theft- Level 6 Felony
- Theft- Level 6 Felony
- Synthetic Identity Deception- Level 6 Felony
- Handgun No Permit- Class A Misdemeanor
- O.W.I. (Endangering)- Class A Misdemeanor
- O.W.I. – Class C Misdemeanor
All persons named in this release are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court. All charges mentioned are merely accusations, actual charges will be determined by the Lake County Prosecutor's Office.
