The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) recently announced the appointment of Detective Corporal Gregory L. Fayson (Ret.) as the district’s new Director of Security. With more than 24 years of distinguished service in law enforcement, Fayson brings extensive experience in crisis response, youth advocacy, mental health awareness, and community partnership to the district’s leadership team.

Fayson recently retired from the Gary Police Department, where he served in several critical roles, including Coordinator of the Crisis Intervention Team (C.I.T.), Hostage Negotiation Team Lead, Detective with the Metro Homicide Unit, and Detective within the Juvenile Division. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a deep commitment not only to public safety but also to prevention, intervention, and community-centered policing.

“School safety is about more than security measures — it’s about relationships, trust, and proactive support systems,” said Fayson. “I am honored to serve the students, families, and staff of Gary Community School Corporation. My goal is to create safe, supportive environments where students feel protected, understood, and empowered to learn.”

A graduate of the University of Phoenix, Fayson earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, strengthening his expertise in behavioral health and youth development. His background uniquely positions him to approach school security through a trauma-informed and mental health–aware lens.

During his tenure with the Gary Police Department, Fayson also coordinated the department’s Mental Health Awareness and Peer Support Program. He served as a liaison between the City of Gary Police Department and the Geminus Corporation for the Mental Awareness Committee, working to combat mental health challenges throughout surrounding communities. His leadership consistently emphasized reducing stigma, increasing access to resources, and fostering resilience.

In addition, Fayson is a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he served on the committee for the Midwest Mental Health Initiative. Through this work, he contributed to the development and implementation of programs designed to raise awareness and provide education on mental health topics across the Midwest region.

Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes expressed confidence in the district’s new security leadership.

“Director Fayson’s experience, integrity, and commitment to mental health advocacy align perfectly with our district’s vision of cultivating safe and supportive learning environments," said Stokes. "His expertise in crisis intervention and youth engagement will strengthen our proactive safety framework and enhance collaboration with families and community partners.”

As Director of Security, Fayson will oversee district-wide safety protocols, emergency preparedness, and security personnel coordination while working closely with school leaders, local law enforcement, and community stakeholders. He will also support restorative approaches and preventive strategies that prioritize student well-being alongside physical security.

"The Gary Community School Corporation remains committed to providing secure, nurturing spaces where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally," added Stokes. "The appointment of Director Gregory L. Fayson reflects the district’s continued investment in comprehensive school safety rooted in partnership, prevention, and purpose."
