Humane Indiana is promoting its annual Home for the Holidays promotion through the end of the year. Some shelter pets’ fees will be waived. “We’d really love to get families into the shelter who are considering a new family pet,” said Jessica Petalas-Hernandez, Humane Indiana Shelter Director. “We really want to encourage the community to adopt don’t shop this holiday and always,” she added.
Adopting from Humane Indiana has its perks. All pets adopted through the shelter are vaccinated, microchipped, and spay/neutered. Adopted shelter pets are also part of the Humane Indiana family and will receive post-adoption support and will receive counseling for life. “Our adoption fee covers a lot, we also set-up families for success and include food to take home, a collar and leash,” Petalas-Hernandez described. The idea is to allow the adopting family to go straight home and avoid stops at pet stores so that their new pet can start to familiarize itself with new home surroundings.
The shelter currently has a variety of sizes and ages of cats and dogs. While adoption fees will be waived on selected pets, a $25 medical fee still applies. Standard adoption protocols also apply, including an adoption screening for potential adopters. “We simply need to make sure people understand the responsibilities that come with becoming a pet owner, specifically for families who have never owned a pet.
