Far from a tale of sweets and mischief, Beyond the Nutcracker reimagines Tchaikovsky’s holiday masterpiece through the eyes of Emma, a young girl in 1940s England. In Artistic Director Julianna Rubio Slager’s vision, each country in Act II becomes a celebration of joy, unity, and peace—a reminder that Christmas is more than glitter and gifts. What if goodwill toward all was more than a phrase? What if love could truly change the world?
With dazzling choreography, lavish costumes, and inspiring performances by Ballet 5:8’s professional dancers and students, this beloved Chicago-area tradition invites audiences to rediscover the heart of the season. This year, select performances feature live accompaniment from the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, transforming the experience into a breathtaking holiday event.
