
Lake County – Master Trooper Russell T. Hayes is retiring from the Indiana State Police after serving the citizens of Indiana for more than 38 years.
Master Trooper Hayes is a native of Gary, Indiana, and a graduate of West Side High School. After high school, he became an EMT and spent four years with the Gary Fire Department. He was selected to attend the 45th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy, graduating in December 1987, and was assigned to the Lowell District. While serving the state, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2009.
Throughout his career, Master Trooper Hayes has served as a Field Training Officer (FTO), background investigator, recruiting liaison to the ISP Recruiting Division, member of the Honor Guard, and member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon (TIP). He also spent nine years as a gaming investigator assigned to the Indiana Gaming Commission. His career includes hundreds of criminal arrests and the investigation of countless traffic crashes. Master Trooper Hayes has been recognized by numerous organizations and received many letters of commendation for his integrity, service, and professionalism as an Indiana State Trooper.
