South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority (SSCVA) has partnered with Purdue University Northwest (PNW) White Lodging School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) and College of Business to provide students with hands-on, real-world experience in destination development and visitor engagement.
This semester, students enrolled in HTM 371: Introduction to Tourism collaborated directly with the SSCVA on a forward-thinking proposal to revitalize the Indiana Welcome Center. Through the project, student teams researched emerging tourism trends, developed innovative concepts, and explored strategies to elevate the visitor experience in Northwest Indiana.
“The project kept students highly engaged as they applied classroom knowledge to a real-world initiative while gaining valuable industry insight,” said Sarala Morrow, College of Business instructor. “I appreciate the partnership with the SSCVA and look forward to future collaborations that provide meaningful opportunities like this for our students.”

The collaboration underscores the value of experiential learning and strengthens the connection between higher education and the regional tourism industry.
“Partnering with the SSCVA gave our students something a classroom alone can't — the chance to present their work to the professionals shaping hospitality in Northwest Indiana,” stated Matthew Bauman, assistant HTM instructor. “When industry leaders take the time to listen, ask questions, and offer feedback, it reinforces for students that what they're learning has real value beyond the textbook. These kinds of collaborations are how we prepare the next generation of hospitality professionals, and they strengthen the connection between Purdue University Northwest and the communities we serve.”
Students also highlighted the impact of these applied learning experiences on their professional growth. “My sales class isn't just a sales class—it's an experience,” said HTM major John Hennessy. “In no other class have I gotten the field experience, real-world knowledge, and networking opportunities than this. If there was one class I could describe the opportunity and skills available through my HTM major, it would be this sales class!”
“Through partnerships like this, South Shore Tourism continues to invest in the future of the hospitality industry while enhancing the region’s appeal as a vibrant destination”, said SSCVA President/CEO Phil Taillon. “The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to workforce development and community engagement across Northwest Indiana.”
