• Parents and student drivers should ALWAYS follow the appropriate arrival and dismissal procedures in the school parking lots. The procedures have been put into place for everyone’s safety.
• Please do not make left turns into the elementary school parking lots to enter the drop-off/pick-up lines, as this is cutting in front of other parents who have been waiting patiently. Please approach the school from the appropriate direction so that you can enter and wait in the line in the correct manner.
• Please do not drive or back into an exit of the school parking lot in an attempt to avoid the appropriate arrival or pick-up line. Doing so could result in a traffic crash or injury to pedestrians who do not see you.
• Please do not drop off your children in the middle of Columbia Avenue in front of the middle or high school as this is very unsafe.
• Encourage your children to always cross at crosswalks, preferably those equipped with walk signals or crossing guards where available. Advise them to look both ways and to make sure that all traffic has stopped before proceeding while also paying attention to their surroundings. Parents should also cross at crosswalks when going to or leaving the school with walkers. Avoid parking on adjacent streets and running across streets where there is no crosswalk as this could be extremely dangerous.
• Avoid talking on the phone or playing music loudly while in school zones so that you are not distracted and can hear your surroundings well.
• Be alert for children or teenagers who might walk out from behind a vehicle or who are attempting to cross at intersections. Always yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross at a crosswalk.
• Never encourage your children to run alone across streets or through parking lots to your vehicle.
• Be respectful of school staff members and crossing guards and follow their directions in the parking lots.
• Always slow down in school zones for the safety of everyone. Munster Police officers regularly patrol the school zones in addition to the school resource officers and are monitoring traffic for safety purposes.
Please report any reckless driving in the areas of the schools immediately by calling 911, and notify your school’s principal or school resource officer if there are any ongoing safety concerns
