Always make sure that the doors to your home are locked, including outer storm doors. Scammers will often push their way into your residence as soon as you open the door while stating that it is an emergency situation.
Always look outside before making contact with individuals on your front porch. If you do not know them, speak with them through a side window or locked storm door.
Beware of individuals who are dressed as utility or construction workers. They will sometimes wear yellow construction vests, hard hats, or false identification and will usually claim that there is some type of safety issue, utility problem, contaminated water, or other emergency situation which requires them to come into your house to test something. While you are distracted in another room, accomplices will come inside and steal cash or valuables. Suspects will often use two-way radios to communicate.
NEVER allow unknown individuals into your residence who you have not called for service.
If you are working in your yard, make sure that you keep your home locked up and take a key with you along with a cell phone if you have one. Make sure that garage connecting doors are always locked.
Report suspicious individuals in your neighborhood immediately by calling 911.
