
Prepare to see a rousing version of one of the popular musicals of the 1970s.
"Godspell" is currently livening up the stage at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie courtesy of Music Theater Works. The production, which is directed by Matthew Silar, runs through Nov. 16.
The musical "Godspell," featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, tells the story of the ministry of Jesus based on the gospel of Matthew. The show's book is written by John Michael Tebelak. Throughout the production, the story is told through song in a type of parable fashion. "Godspell" first appeared Off-Broadway in 1971 and a movie version of the work was released in 1973.

In the Music Theater Works' version, the story is set in a modern-day coffee shop where a diverse cast of performers meet and interact with one another. According to Music Theater Works' artistic director Kyle Dougan-LeBlanc, setting the show "in a Café, we celebrate what a Café represents: a place where people gather, share stories, and form meaningful connections.
The talented cast displays strong vocals throughout the show. Starring as Jesus in "Godspell" is Eldon Warner-Soriano with Jacob Simon portraying John the Baptist. Also featured in the show are P-Jay Adams, Brandon Acosta, Diana Marilyn Alvarez, Maxwell J. DeTogne, Tafadzwa Diener, Kaitlin Feely, Emily Holland, Nicholas Ian, Jenna Makkawy, Dani Pike, Connor Ripperger, Concetta Russo, Ethan Smith, Ben Woods and Alex Villasenor.

Among standout musical numbers are "Savor the People," "Prepare Ye," "O, Bless the Lord, My Soul," "All Good Gifts," and the hit "Day by Day."
Gather a few friends and pick a date to enjoy this update of a musical theater classic from decades ago.
