August 17, 1940     Wendell Willkie accepted the Republican nomination to run for President in his hometown of Elwood. Over 260,000 were in the crowd.

 

August 18, 1920     The 19th Amendment was ratified by the United States Congress, giving women the right to vote

 

August 19, 1909     The first automobile race was held at the new Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 5-mile dash was a disaster because of the breaking up of the crushed rock track. Six people died.  Louis Schwitzer won with an average speed of 57.43 mph.
