On Monday, September 21, 2026, Indiana State Police Superintendent Anthony M. Scott announced the reassignment of Trooper Dawson Patrick to the Special Operations Division, where he will serve as a member of the Indiana State Police SWAT team. The assignment places Trooper Patrick among the department’s specialized personnel responsible for responding to high-risk incidents and tactical operations throughout the state.

Patrick’s selection follows a rigorous and highly competitive process designed to identify troopers capable of performing under demanding physical, mental, and tactical conditions. Candidates were required to successfully complete a comprehensive written examination, oral interview, and evaluation of their overall job performance. Applicants were also required to successfully complete the ISP SWAT selection process, which included a demanding physical agility assessment, handgun and rifle qualifications, and performance evaluations conducted in a high-stress environment.

Patrick’s career reflects a commitment to service that began well before his time with the Indiana State Police. A native of Knox, Indiana, Patrick graduated from Knox Community High School in 2019. During his senior year, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and went on to serve for six years as a military police officer, ultimately attaining the rank of sergeant and serving overseas. While serving in the military, Patrick continued his education and graduated from Purdue Global University with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice.

Patrick joined the Indiana State Police after graduating from the 84th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy in December 2023. He was assigned to the Lowell District, where he quickly established himself as a trooper willing to step forward when duty called. Since joining the department, Patrick has earned his Instructor Development Certification and served as a Tactical Medical Instructor, further expanding his ability to train and prepare fellow troopers for critical incidents.

In 2025, Patrick was recognized with the Bronze Star for heroism after taking decisive action to save the life of a woman trapped inside a burning vehicle. His actions demonstrated courage, composure, and commitment to protecting others that define what it means to be an Indiana State Trooper.

Throughout his service with the Indiana State Police, Patrick has consistently answered the call whether in his district, in his community, or during moments when lives were on the line. His selection to the Special Operations Division-SWAT reflects that record of service, discipline, and performance.

Please join us in congratulating Trooper Patrick on his new assignment.
