This week and throughout the fall semester, the Munster Police Department will begin our 39TH YEAR of presenting the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program to our community’s students. Approximately 2,000 Munster students receive D.A.R.E. instruction each school year. The safety topics discussed and the number of weeks of instruction will depend on the grade level.

Daren the Lion | Heroes Wiki | FandomDuring the fall semester, the following schools and grade levels will receive safety visits:

• Pre-K at Frank Hammond Elementary School and Eads Elementary School

• Kindergarten, 1st, and 3rd grades at Eads Elementary School, Elliott Elementary School, and Frank Hammond Elementary School

• 5th graders (core curriculum) at St. Thomas More School and St. Paul’s Lutheran School (the program finishes up with graduation ceremonies in December)

• 8th graders (middle school curriculum) at St. Thomas More School, St. Paul’s Lutheran School, and Wilbur Wright Middle School

Please note that the fifth graders at the public schools, younger grades at the parochial schools, and some eighth graders at Wilbur Wright Middle School will receive safety instruction during the spring semester.

D.A.R.E. INSTRUCTORS: Students at St. Thomas More, Frank Hammond, Elliott, and St. Paul’s are instructed by Officer Brian Bernardino, students at Eads are instructed by Sergeant James Ghrist, and students at Wilbur Wright Middle School are instructed by Officer Kevin Cooley.

The Munster Police Department has proudly presented the D.A.R.E. Program to students since 1988 and it continues to be made possible through the generous support from our community (our sponsors are displayed below). Students will be encouraged to share what they have learned with their parents each week and we encourage families to discuss these lessons at home to help promote safety for their children.

We look forward to visiting the schools this semester and to holding the fifth grade D.A.R.E. graduation ceremonies later this year. Thank you for your continued support of our D.A.R.E. Program! For more information, please contact our COP Unit at 219-836-6639.
