Chicago Sinfonietta ignites the stage with an empowered tribute to women who break molds, blaze trails, and rise—again and again. Conducted by Mei-Ann Chen, featuring Chicago’s own Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, we pair live orchestra with original choreography in not one, but two works: Florence Price’s Dances in the Canebrakes,

reimagined through movement that honors her, and the World Premiere of a new CS commission from Shirley J. Thompson, inspired by women's intuition.

AMERICAN RHAPSODY - Season Finale

A powerful tribute to the voices that shaped the American dream - from the pioneering spirit of jazz to the deep roots of African American spirituals, this concert honors musical legacies that define our nation’s sound—and pushes them forward with bold new vision. In celebration of the 100th birthday of jazz icon Miles Davis, CS presents a brand-new symphonic commission by our own Seth Pae, Assistant Principal Violist and former Freeman Orchestral Fellow. Pianist Clayton Stephenson, lights up the stage in George Gershwin’s jazz-infused masterpiece. William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, a towering emotional work rooted in African American spirituals, closes the program. This masterpiece remains a stirring tribute to resilience, heritage, and hope—more relevant and moving than ever.
