ART on THE MART’s summer season launches June 6, which will feature new commissions by British-Nigerian artist and designer Yinka Ilori and American post-conceptual artist Cory Arcangel! through Sept 11
Yinka Ilori, known for his immersive installations, will unveil his most personal project to date in Chicago with ART on THE MART. Entitled Omi Okun (Yoruba for ‘Ocean Water’), the multi-sensory work amplifies memories by recreating Ilori’s experience of ritual and traveling from London to Margate. Omi Okun is split into four chapters (white garments, incense scents, water, dreamscape) and will feature Ilori speaking and echoes of a choir. The projection will coincide with NeoCon (June 10-12), where Ilori will give a keynote speech and debut a new line of textiles with Momentum Textiles + Wallcovering, showcasing his signature bold colors and patterns inspired by his dual heritage.
Cory Arcangel, known for exploring the possibilities and limitations of modern digital technologies, will debut a single-channel video and façade installation titled Water, Wind and Fire - which pays homage to the iconic Chicago band Earth, Wind and Fire. The video footage gathered from Chicago and Arcangel's home in Stavanger, Norway, undergoes transformation through Arcangel's custom “deep frying” software, Cookery, resulting in abstract and unpredictable compositions. Having focused on image data degradation for nearly two decades, Arcangel's work explores the gradual dissolution of JPGs, challenging the notion of static digital codes. This large-scale Chicago installation marks the first showcase of his video work using Cookery, making it a groundbreaking moment in his career.
