The work of two Bishop Noll Art Club members was recently showcased during the 38th annual Disabilities Award Breakfast organized by the Hammond's Mayor’s Commission on Disabilities.
Student artists were asked to submit artwork for the event theme, "A World of Opportunities."
Anna Perez, a Bishop Noll student who poured her creativity into her artwork, was awarded first place and had her artwork featured on the cover of the program for the event.
Another Bishop Noll student, Shalom Villalpondo, also received recognition for her artistic contribution. The commission loved her artwork so much that they decided to include it as well on the back of the program.
As the contest winner, Perez received a plaque and a gift basket, a token of appreciation for her exceptional work.
“When I found out my piece was chosen I felt very proud of myself that I was able to do something that made me get out of my comfort zone,” Perez said. “I felt as if I finally was recognized for something I’m really passionate about. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to have my art chosen and to have been seen by many people.”
Perez's inspiration for her acrylic piece was the world around her and what she has learned from various cultures. Through learning about different cultures I was able to create a variety of characters that represented multiple opportunities that one can take as a career in life.
Perez is actively involved in Bishop Noll’s Art Club.
“It has been a place where I can fully engage in my artistic abilities. I enjoy the fact that Art Club creates a space to make art and engage with others,” she said.
Villalpondo's piece was created with watercolors and inspired by the artwork of Wassily Kandinsky and Georgia O’Keeffe.
She is also a member of the Art Club and said she enjoys, “being able to try different mediums that are offered in Art Club.”
