The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority is excited to announce the upcoming Women in Steel event taking place on October 1st from 5:30 to 7:15 pm at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond. This inspiring gathering aims to celebrate and empower women in the steel industry, providing a platform for networking and mentorship.
"We are very excited to have Women in Steel be one of the final programs of the Calumet Voices, National Stories exhibition that has been traveling the region for nearly five years,” stated Mario Longoni, Lead Environmental Social Scientist, Keller Action Center; Field Museum. “The challenges women face in the industrial workforce are typically downplayed in favor of simply celebrating their participation. We'll be taking a balanced approach in calling out achievements, challenges and perseverance."
This event will feature distinguished speakers, including industry leaders and trailblazers, who will share their experiences and insights. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and tour the Calumet Voices/National Stories exhibit which includes a 9-foot plate of steel from 1943 that women steelworkers welded with their names.
The event will be a participatory storytelling event. Come with your stories or simply to listen. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. Register online at alongthesouthshore.com/calumet-voices. If you are unable to RSVP, don’t let that stop you from stopping by.
