Weinberg/Newton Gallery (688 N. Milwaukee Ave.), a non-commercial gallery dedicated to promoting social justice causes, is partnering with Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) to present, For Those Without Choice, on view through April 15. The exhibition brings together new and established pro-choice advocates to present artwork that directly addresses abortion and reproductive rights, dedicated to those impacted by laws that limits personal decision-making by controlling and criminalizing medical access to reproductive-related procedures.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of related programs led by Planned Parenthood of Illinois, Weinberg/Newton Gallery, and the featured artists including a sewing circle, hands-on art making workshops, teen night, collective artist conversation, closing party and more. The programming has been thoughtfully curated for guests to expand the conversation on one of the cornerstone societal issues of our time, encouraging education and thought-provoking dialogue in a safe space.
“Weinberg/Newton Gallery is unique in that both art and advocacy are the foundation for all our exhibitions and partnerships,” says Nabiha Khan-Giordano, Executive Director and Curator of the exhibition. “With this exhibition, the fight for reproductive freedom is central —And it is important to recognize that such a freedom cannot be taken for granted. The artists in For Those Without Choice are strong, intergenerational, and they are ready to answer the call—Making their life experiences and their art available to this cause. Through this exhibition and accompanying public programs we hope others join the fight for reproductive freedom for all.”
Many works were created in direct response to the recent rollback of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States of America affecting the constitutional right to an abortion across the country. Collectively, the artists reached a vital consensus: Abortion is Freedom. Abortion is Healthcare. Abortion is Normal. Abortion is NOT a Crime. Keep Abortion Legal.
For Those Without Choice is curated by Weinberg/Newton Gallery Executive Director Nabiha Khan-Giordano and presented in partnership with Planned Parenthood. The featured artists include: Aleksandra Mir, Angela Davis Fagan, Catherine Sullivan, Cathy Hsiao, Claire Ashley, D Rosen, Ellen Rothenberg, Guerilla Girls Broadband, Gwyneth Anderson, Hope Esser, Iris Bernblum, Jenny Polak, Judith Brotman, Julia Klein, Kartina Majkut, L Vinebaum, Maria Robinson/Sayward Schoonmaker, Martha Poggioli, Marzena Abrahamik, Maymay Jumsai, Michele Pred, Shout Your Abortion, Stacee Kalmanovsky, Udita Upadhyaya, and Wildcat Ebony Brown.

ABOUT
Weinberg/Newton Gallery is a non-commercial gallery with a mission to collaborate with nonprofit organizations and artists to educate and engage the public on social justice issues. Through artwork and programming, the gallery provides a vital space for open discourse on critical contemporary issues facing our communities. Connecting artists with social justice organizations, we work to drive change and cultivate a culture of consciousness.
Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) is uniquely positioned to meet this moment head-on, centering equitable access to care in the communities they serve and leading the fight to reclaim and advance our rights. PPIL is innovating health care delivery, advocating for legislation to protect providers and patients, and advancing a world in which reproductive freedom is a reality for all people.
When so many states have restricted access to life-saving abortion care, here in Illinois, PPIL has expanded access and provided compassionate care to patients who have traveled here from over 30 states, as well as patients from across Illinois. PPIL also provides medically-accurate, age-appropriate, and stigma-free education to thousands of young people and students across the state each year.
Illinois is a haven state in the Midwest, and PPIL has been preparing for this moment for years—opening new health centers, expanding telehealth options and abortion navigation services, and working with other providers and abortion funds to increase capacity. PPIL will continue this critical work, utilizing innovative approaches to provide care to a rapidly growing number of patients, addressing persistent disparities and barriers to care, serving as a trusted provider that connects communities with the resources needed to access essential care, and protecting the legislation that has secured Illinois as an oasis for sexual and reproductive health care and education.
