Jasper County- On December 11th, 2024, at approximately 4:00 P.M., Troopers were dispatched to a single vehicle crash located on I-65 northbound near the 228.5 mile-marker. The 228.5 mile-marker is approximately a mile and a half south of the State Road 10 exit for Demotte.
Preliminary Investigation shows that a blue 2008 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on I-65 at the 228.5 mile-marker when the vehicle lost control and ran off the roadway. The vehicle rolled over and ultimately struck a tree located approximately 50 feet from the roadway. Trooper Martin Benner arrived on-scene and found that the passenger of the vehicle was unconscious and not breathing. Trooper Benner immediately began performing CPR on the individual until EMS could arrive on-scene. Trooper Benner was assisted by the driver of the vehicle and three Good Samaritans who had stopped to help. One of the Good Samaritans was identified as Theron Bogan of Rensselaer who was an off-duty paramedic. Due to the icy roadway conditions, Trooper Benner, Mr. Bogan and the other Good Samaritans performed CPR for approximately twenty minutes until EMS was able to arrive safely on-scene and take over treatment. EMS was then able to revive the individual and he was transported by ambulance to Franciscan Health Crown Point for further treatment.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the vehicle crash.
Also assisting on-scene was the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Jasper County Fire and EMS, Cheever's Towing, and the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.
