The Munster Police Department and Choice Community Council of Munster would like to thank everyone who participated in or sponsored Munster’s National Night Out Against Crime Celebration which was held on Tuesday, August 3rd at the Munster Community Pool. The event is held each August to promote positive police and community partnerships through a variety of both fun and educational activities for all ages.
This year’s event included free swimming, door prizes, a parade, games, food, booth participants, a magic show, emergency vehicles, several helicopter landings, K-9 demonstrations, crime prevention information, and an awesome closing fireworks show which was generously sponsored by Krazy Kaplan’s Fireworks. Our special guests John “Jurko” Jurkovic, Tim Tyrrell, and Angel Lopez also met with the participants to sign autographs and take photos.
In addition to these and many other activities we hosted a blood drive on the event grounds again this year which resulted in many donations during the evening. The American Red Cross was very thankful for the number of our attendees who participated in the drive this year. Our police department also created almost 140 child identification cards that evening.
We also appreciate the 100 booth participants which included Munster businesses, community service organizations, faith-based groups, and school clubs and/or teams. Students from Munster High School and Eads School assisted by running games for children or providing musical performances and represented our school district in a very positive way.
Helicopters provided by Superior Ambulance and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department also made landings on the event grounds and Strack & Van Til’s generously provided free water for our event’s volunteers and booth participants that evening.
We would also like to thank the many town employees who make this event possible including the members of the Munster Parks & Recreation, the Munster Fire Department, and Munster Public Works who delivered cones, barricades, and interacted with the public in a positive way.
Last but not least we would like to thank our dedicated group of almost 50 volunteers who helped to plan or actively participated in the event last week. We would also like to congratulate this year’s Citizenship Award winners and thank them for their support of our community policing efforts this year.
Photos and sponsors for our event, which was featured on WGN-9 news that night, are displayed on our Facebook page and website. Thank you again to all of our event sponsors and participants this year
