As more people look for creative ways to build confidence, reduce stress, and reconnect socially, comedy training is finding a new role beyond the stage. This summer, The Second City is spotlighting classes designed not only to teach improv and comedy writing, but to encourage personal growth, self-expression, and emotional wellness.

From improv classes that help students become more present and confident to courses specifically designed for people navigating stress and anxiety, The Second City Training Center says its programs increasingly attract students seeking connection and personal development as much as performance skills.

To encourage new students to explore those opportunities, The Second City is offering $100 off intro-level classes during a limited-time summer promotion. From June 17 at 7 a.m. through June 21 at 11:59 p.m., students can use the code SUMMER2026 to receive discounts on select introductory courses, including Improv 1, Writing 1, and Improv for Anxiety 1.

One of the Training Center’s most distinctive offerings, Improv for Anxiety 1, uses ensemble-based improv exercises to help participants manage feelings of stress and anxiety in a welcoming, low-pressure environment. The course focuses on presence, adaptability, and stepping outside of comfort zones through collaborative games and exercises.

“It's amazing to see how these classes transform people,” said Jess Mitolo, Senior Artistic Director of The Second City Training Center. “It allows us to connect to a part of ourselves we don't often show to others. There's something profoundly joyful and liberating watching people become the most honest and playful versions of themselves. The classes are more than just a belly laugh. They are self-care and personal development wrapped up in a creative outlet. These classes are designed to promote growth, celebrate identity, and nurture a bolder you.”

In addition to Improv for Anxiety 1, the summer offerings include:

  • Improv 1 — An introductory improv course focused on spontaneity, communication, collaboration, and confidence-building through group exercises and games.
  • Writing 1 — A beginner sketch comedy writing class designed to help students sharpen their voice, generate original ideas, and develop storytelling skills.

The Second City says no previous performance experience is required for any introductory-level class, and many students enroll simply to try something new, meet people, or build confidence in a supportive environment.
