We are excited to announce SBCT's 2022 production schedule, where stars will rise and cross, families will feud and be found, bards will bawl and blokes will bare all. All shows will be open for in-person attendance while still protecting the health and safety of cast members, staff, and patrons through the Civic’s COVID policy.
“With something for everyone, our 2022 season is a smorgasbord of stories,” said Executive Director Aaron Nichols. “Six locations, 14 productions, over 100 performances: we are doubling down on optimism.”

“Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” (Feb. 11-20, 2022): Play by August Wilson. Set in 1911 Pittsburgh, boarding house owners Seth and Bertha Holly host a makeshift family of people during the Great Migration of the 1910s when descendants of former slaves moved in large numbers from the South, seeking jobs and new lives.
“A Little Night Music” (March 11-27, 2022): Book by Hugh Wheeler, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Set in the Swedish countryside at the turn of the century, A Little Night Music brings together surprising liaisons and long-simmering passions. This witty and wildly romantic story centers on the elegant actress Disiree Armfeldt and the spider’s web of sensuality, intrigue, and desire that surrounds her.
“Disney’s Newsies” (March 25-April 2, 2022): Book by Harvey Fierstein, music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman. Based on the real newsboy strike of 1899 and Disney’s 1992 film, Jack Kelly dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. When his bosses raise distribution prices, Jack fights for and rallies his army of newsies to strike.
“Noises Off” (April 22-May 1, 2022): Play by Michael Frayn. Called “the funniest farce ever written,” “Noises Off” presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and off stage intrigue, and an errant herring enhance the plot of this classic comic play.
“The Lonesome West” (May 13-22, 2022): Play by Martin McDonagh. In this dark Irish comedy, two brothers in rural Ireland squabble over their father’s inheritance. A local parish priest and a young girl, along with their bootleg whiskey supplier, attempt to keep the brothers from quarreling.
“The Outsider” (June 10-19, 2022): Play by Paul Slade Smith. Ned might be the worst candidate to ever run for office. But his consultant thinks otherwise. What if the public is actually looking for the worst candidate ever? The Outsider is a timely and hilarious comedy that skews politics and celebrates democracy.
“Something Rotten” (July 15-31, 2022): Book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick, music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Set in 1595, the two brothers in this hilarious smash strive to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of a Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, the brothers set out to write the world’s first musical.
Classics in the Park: “Sense and Sensibility” (Aug. 12-28, 2022): This play, written by Kate Hamill based on Jane Austen’s classic novel “Sense and Sensibility,” follows the societal struggles of the Dashwood sisters as they navigate the delicate rules of Regency society. Their search for true love and acceptance in society causeS them to question their own beliefs, realizing that fairytale endings are not always what one expects.
Classics in the Park: “Much Ado About Nothing” (August 12-28, 2022): This comedic play by William Shakespeare involve two, intertwined love stories driven by misunderstandings, deception, and love, creating chaos and intrigue. Don Pedro is tricked by his mischievous brother into believing that his lover has been unfaithful. In light of this, he refuses her at the wedding ceremony. In the meantime, Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into believing that each one cares for the other although their history has shown that they prefer to antagonize each other. In the end, all the madness becomes regarded as much ado about nothing.
“Silent Sky” (Sept. 9-18, 2022): Play by Lauren Gunderson. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt who struggled to be recognized for her discoveries because she was a woman.
“West Side Story” (Oct. 8-9, 2022): Book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and featuring the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. A forbidden love emerges as tensions rise between rival gangs. Experience Romeo and Juliet reimagined in New York City in the 1950s.
“The Outsiders” (Oct. 21-30, 2022): Book by Se Hinton, play by Christopher Sergel. Ponyboy and Johnny are a part of a lower-class gang called the Greasers. As tensions rise between them and a rival gang, a tragic death forces them to deal with consequences.
“The Full Monty” (Nov. 4-13, 2022): Book by Terrence McNally, music by David Yazbek. A group of unemployed steel-working men frustrated with life, women, and work, decide that regardless of looks or ability, they are going to be the best Chippendale strippers ever seen. A surprisingly heartwarming and poignant comic musical.
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, JR.” (Dec 2-18, 2022): Rudolph’s red nose brings unwanted attention and ridicule, so he sets off on a journey to find a place to fit in. But he discovers that home is where he actually belongs and that his shiny nose is a gift in itself.
