Death, taxes, and the Gary SouthShore RailCats (5-6) winning in extra innings. The RailCats won 5-1 against the Milwaukee Milkmen (6-4) in game two of today’s double header at Franklin Field.
Pitching reigned supreme for both teams this evening as each starter allowed just one earned run after a 10-1 Milkmen win in game one of the series.
David Griffin earned the no decision with five innings of work, allowing one earned on five hits while striking out six. In the opposing dugout, Jake Matthys threw six innings of one run baseball, allowing five hits with two strikeouts.
Milwaukee had a 1-0 lead in the fourth before a solo blast from Phil Caulfield over the left-field fence to even things up at one a piece. Caulfield’s first home run of the season, en route to a 2-for-4 day at the dish, came at crucial time to knot things up and send the game to extras.
In relief for Gary SouthShore, Cole Cook shined out of the pen. Cook dealt four innings of one-hit baseball, holding the Milkmen scoreless and extending his scoreless innings streak to 11 over his past two relief appearances.
Once the game hit the tenth frame, the RailCats’ bats took over. After Seth Bear issued two walks to lead off the inning, Nikola Vasic advanced the runners with a sac-bunt followed by an intentional walk issued to Raymond Jones to load the bases.
With Hayden Schilling at the dish, the lefty-poked a liner through the three-four hole to plate the leading run in Caulfield. On the next at-bat, Jesus Marriaga drove in another on a sac-fly to right field.
With two down, Cameron Comer ripped a double down the left-field line, scoring two as the RailCats extended their lead 5-1 in the tenth frame.
To close things out, Nolan Clenney went good morning, good afternoon and good night as the ‘Cats nabbed game two of the three-game series in Milwaukee this evening.
Game three between the Gary SouthShore RailCats and Milwaukee Milkmen will be played tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in at Franklin Field as the rubber match decides the series’ winner.
