The Munster Police Department reports there were four reported thefts from vehicles in town this past week. In each of these cases, either the vehicle was left unlocked or valuables were left in plain view inside of the vehicle. Please take these important steps to help prevent thefts:
• ALWAYS lock your vehicle while at work, in front of your residence, while visiting parks, or even at gas pumps, even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes or event while you are pumping gas. Leaving your vehicle unlocked makes it much easier for thieves to get to your valuables.
• ALWAYS remove all of your valuables from plain view such as purses, wallets, briefcases, backpacks, GPS units, laptops, large amounts of loose change or other similar types of items. Thieves will just break your window to get access to your items so always remove them.
• ALWAYS try to park in a well-lit area if you can.
• ALWAYS activate your vehicle’s alarm.
• ALWAYS report suspicious activity such as cars that are driving slowly through parking lots for extended periods of time or individuals who seem to be checking door handles or peering into car windows.
Call 911 right away and provide the dispatcher with the location and description.
