 Stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions such as cell phones and texting while you are walking or shopping to prevent pickpocket thefts or people sneaking up on you.

 Have your car key out and in your hand before you leaving a building so that you will be ready to enter your vehicle and leave upon reaching it.

 When possible, always walk, jog, bike, or shop with a friend so that you can look out for each other.

 Avoid dark walkways or alleys, which could be hiding places for potential attackers.

 Stand tall and walk confidently. Walk with determination to show that you are aware of your surroundings.

 If you feel that you are being followed, call the police immediately and attempt to get to a busy area with other people and witnesses.

 Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave right away and get help if needed.

 If you carry pepper spray, have it out and ready when you are walking to your vehicle when necessary.

 If you are afraid to go out to your car after work or shopping due to darkness, call 911 to ask for an escort. You should also call 911 if you see anything suspicious in the parking lot or around your place of work.
