**** Recommended After the opening performance of Paranormal Activity at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, a group of us were talking about the performance, which we had enjoyed. Somebody said that it had been way too long since we’d seen a good suspense-filled play – maybe since Wait until Dark. At any rate, if you love shows about things that go bump in the night, you’ll love this one. 4 Spotlights
Let me start by saying there are no spoilers in this review. Loud noises and flashing lights – and things that go bump in the night – really did result in gasps and squeaks from the audience.

An American couple, James (Patrick Heusinger) and Lou (Cher Alvarez), moved to London after something happened back in Chicago. They are still getting settled in their beautiful London home (kudos to Scenic Designer Fly Davis on the gorgeous two-story set) when something odd happens.
Soon after, James gets a Facetime call from his mother, Carolanne (Shannon Cochran). She redefines the term ‘helicopter mother’ – always ready to blame Lou for any and all problems, so when she hears about the odd happening, she’s ready to jump on a plane.

At any rate, the odd events continue, leading James and Lou to think the house is haunted. Bringing a load of scientific equipment, a well-known medium, Etheline Cotgrave (Kate Fry), arrives to investigate. When something happens during a séance, she leaves in a hurry.
Paranormal Activity was written by Levi Holloway, based on the 2007 Paramount Pictures film produced, written, directed and filmed by Oren Peli. The play had its world premiere in Leeds, UK. The American premiere, at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, is directed by Felix Barrett, restaged by Levi Holloway. Ensemble: Sophie Kaegi.

Kudos to Lighting Designer Anna Watson, Sound Designer Gareth Fry, Video Designer Luke Halls and Illusion Designer Chris Fisher for making the magic happen.
