On Friday, January 10th, Trooper Carlson responded to a vehicle crash that occurred on southbound I-65 near the 206 mile-marker. This location is a mile north of the Rensselaer/Remington exit.  It was a single vehicle crash, minor damage, and required a pullout for a 2008 Toyota Camry.

During the crash investigation, it was determined that the driver was lying about his identity and was actually wanted on a probation violation through Ohio for past violent crimes. While trying to detain the driver, he forcibly pulled away and ran across all lanes of I-65 almost causing several accidents in the inclement weather. The driver ran into the east ditch, and into a field.

Trooper Carlson relocated his vehicle to the northbound side and was preparing his K9 partner, Cooper, for a track.  The driver then ran out of the ditch and across the interstate once again where he tried to drive his car off the tow truck. The tow truck operator fled on foot from his tow truck. The suspect eventually gave himself up and was placed into custody. The driver was positively identified as Carlos D. Sept, 52, from Dayton, Ohio.

Further investigation and a positive K9 alert by K9 Cooper found Mr. Sept to be in possession of marijuana and suspected heroin. The probation violation was found to be non-extraditable.  Mr. Sept was transported and incarcerated at the Jasper County Jail. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene.

The suspect is preliminarily charged with the following offenses:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance- Level 6 Felony
  • Intimidation- Level 6 Felony
  • False Identity Statement- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Resisting Law Enforcement- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Possession of Marijuana- Class A Misdemeanor

The above-mentioned charges are accusations of a crime. Final charges will be determined by the Jasper County Prosecutor.
