Thu, 07/27/2023 - 8:38pm by laughingcat

New Philharmonic, under the baton of Maestro Kirk Muspratt, performs a free outdoor concert at the McAninch Arts Center’s Lakeside Pavilion, located at 425 Fawell Blvd. on the College of DuPage campus, at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 30th. The program features a mix of pops, movie score and classical music including “Passacaglia in Primary Colors” from “Fifteen: Symphonic Fantasy on the Art of Andy Warhol” originally commissioned and premiered by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2022 in celebration of the orchestra’s 125th anniversary. The piece will receive its Chicago area premiere in New Philharmonic’s concert in honor of the Cleve Carney Museum of Art’s WARHOL exhibition taking place through Sept. 10.

In addition to “Passacaglia in Primary Colors,” New Philharmonic will showcase classical works including: Hellmesberger’s “Kleiner Anzeiger Galop,” Op. 4; selections from Strauss’ “Du und Du Waltz,” Op. 367 (featured in the 1956 album “Waltzes by Johann Strauss, Jr.,” one of 50 albums featuring cover art by Warhol), “Dance of the Comedians” from Smetana’s “Bartered Bride” and Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld;” Skoryk’s “Melody in A minor;” Sousa’s “Washington Post March” and “The Stars and Stripes for Ever;” and Lowden’s “Armed Forces Salute.” The audience will also be treated to music from popular films “Avengers End Game-Portals” (2019), “The Witches of Eastwick” (1987) and the “James Bond” and “Star Wars” series.

Guest baritone Misha Bouvier, last seen by MAC audiences in New Philharmonic’s 2022 New Year’s Eve concerts, will be featured in “Te Busco” made popular by 20th Century Cuban singer Celia Cruz, “Never Enough” from the P.T. Barnum biopic “The Greatest Showman” (2017) and “In the Ghetto,” a popular international hit in 1969 by Elvis Presley (one of Warhol’s favorite vocal artists) featuring lyrics by Mac Davis.

Admission to New Philharmonic’s July 30 concert is free, however, in the spirit of Andy Warhol who often anonymously volunteered at food banks, a donation of a canned good for the College of DuPage Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is requested. Seating begins one hour prior to the concert.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Outside alcohol, coolers, kegs or umbrellas are not allowed. Access to the concert and the Lakeside Pavilion does not include access to the WARHOL exhibition. Exhibition tickets and additional information are available at www.Warhol2023.org.

New Philharmonic, the only professional orchestra based in DuPage County, Ill., has inspired classical music enthusiasts in Chicago and the suburbs for more than four decades. New Philharmonic was recently honored with the Illinois Council of Orchestras’ 2020 ICO Award in the category Programming of the Year. It continues to thrive with the goal to give innovative treatment to both classic compositions and modern works while striving to make the music accessible to new audiences and youth through a variety of educational efforts. Today, under the direction of Kirk Muspratt, named 2018 Conductor of the Year (Professional Orchestra) by Illinois Council of Orchestras, New Philharmonic consists of more than 60 professional musicians and typically performs more than a dozen concerts a year, reaching more than 7,500 from the greater Chicago area annually.

Season support for New Philharmonic is provided in part by the JCS Fund of the DuPage Foundation; Anonymous; Brookdale Glen Ellyn; a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency; WDCB 90.9 FM and the College of DuPage Foundation.

New Philharmonic’s July 30 concert is part of the series of programming developed to support the WARHOL exhibition, unfolding across nearly 11,000 square-feet of exhibition space now through Sept. 10 at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art. In total, more than 200 original Warhol works are on display, including the 94 works from “Andy Warhol Portfolios: A Life in Pop | Works from the Bank of America Collection” on loan through Bank of America’s Art in our Communities® program, and a collection of more than 150 Warhol photographs from the College of DuPage’s Permanent Art Collection. Visitors will experience Andy Warhol’s life through interactive exhibits, recreations and videos created exclusively for this exhibition including a historical exhibit, Kids Pop Art Print Factory, Studio 54 Experience, Central Park-inspired outdoor space and Silver Clouds installation. For tickets visit www.Warhol2023.org.

WARHOL featuring “Andy Warhol Portfolios: A Life in Pop | Works from the Bank of America Collection” is presented by Bank of America and made possible through support from Ball Horticultural Company, Anonymous, Wight & Company, DuPage Foundation; JCS Arts, Health and Education Fund of the DuPage Foundation, Clayco and the College of DuPage Foundation.

About the Cleve Carney Museum of Art
