National Police Week runs this year from May 14-20 and offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. 246 police officers died in the line of duty in 2022 and 42 have died in 2023, with 2,633 line of duty deaths in the past 10 years.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those what have paid the ultimate sacrifice. This week draws in between 25,000-40,000 attendees.
The Munster Police Department would like to thank the many police officers around the world for their service and we continue to honor the many who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their communities.
