In the week or so leading up to our National Night Out Celebration on Tuesday, August 5th, the Munster Police Department encourages Munster residents to get involved with a number of additional pre-events that will be taking place in between July 26th and August 4th which are either being held to promote safety or to build unity in our neighborhoods and community. They are listed below:
• CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECK - Saturday, July 26th from 9:00am to 12:00pm in the Munster Town Hall parking lot (1005 Ridge Road). Parents and grand parents can stop by to have their car seat checked for safe and proper installation or for recalls by certified Car Seat Technicians from the Munster Police Department, Munster Fire Department, Powers Health, Franciscan Health, and Safe Kids NWI while also picking up helpful safety information. Please enter from Ridge Road if you are participating that morning.
• BIKE SAFETY RODEO - Saturday, July 26th from 1:30pm-3:00pm at Frank Hammond Park. This event is for children up to 12 years of age who are asked to bring their bicycles with them, and free helmets will be made available courtesy of SafeKids NWI. Participants can also register their bicycles on-site with the police department, learn bicycle safety tips, and enter a FREE drawing to win a $200 gift card towards a new bicycle sponsored by the Munster Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #147. The event will conclude with a ride around the track with an officer and other volunteers.
• POLICE VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER - This event is by invitation only, and is for Neighborhood Crime Watch Captains, Volunteers in Police Service, National Night Out Volunteers, Choice Community Council members, Dog Walker Watch members, and other volunteers who have helped out with police programs during the past year. Food, drinks, snacks, door prizes, and certificates will be included. Sponsored by Dante’s House of Pizza.
• SENIOR SAFETY BINGO - Thursday, July 31st from 11:00am-3:00pm at the Munster Social Center. *MUST RSVP through PARKS DEPARTMENT AT 219-836-PARKS*. Bingo games will be played for regular winnings plus safety prizes sponsored by ACE Hardware. A lunch will also be catered sponsored by Park Place of St. John and Arby’s.
• CANNED FOOD DRIVE - Friday, August 1st from 9:00am-2:00pm at the Munster Police Department (1001 Ridge Road). Please drop off canned goods and non-perishable items which will be provided to a local food pantry for individuals in need.
• TOWN-WIDE BLOCK PARTIES - Saturday, August 2nd. Thank you to the many areas that registered to hold parties on their blocks or in their subdivisions. Officers and firefighters will be visiting them throughout the afternoon and evening to choose this year’s award winners.
• MOVIE NIGHT - Monday, August 4th at Centennial Park. Moana 2 will begin at dusk. Admission is FREE to the public, and refreshments will be available on-site.
