The Munster Police Department would like to remind residents that the lobby of the Munster Police Department, located at 1001 Ridge Road, is available for any resident who would like to make internet purchase transactions. The lobby is recorded 24 hours a day with audio and video surveillance, and using the lobby can help to discourage fraud, theft, robbery, assault or other similar types of crimes that have occurred during such transactions in nearby communities. Signage such as the one pictured has been posted near the police department to encourage residents to make use of the lobby for these transactions.
Please always follow these safety tips:
• Agree to meet the buyer or seller at the police station. Remember that no place is 100% guaranteed to be safe, but the police station is one of the safer places that you can possibly meet to make these transactions.
• Meet in the daytime when possible. If you enter the lobby during the day and the Records clerks ask if you need assistance, simply advise them that you are there to make a internet purchase transaction.
• Look over all of your purchased items before you provide the payment, or look at the payment to make sure that the bills do not appear to be counterfeit. If anything about the transaction appears to be suspicious, pick up the phone on the wall and dial 911 to report the matter.
• If you are especially nervous about the transaction that you are making, arrive early and use the wall phone to notify an officer that you will be making the transaction and about your concerns.
