Lookingglass Theatre Company announces the cast for the return of Chicago’s beloved holiday tradition, The Steadfast Tin Soldier! The ensemble cast features Lookingglass Ensemble Members Kasey Foster as Ballerina and Anthony Irons as Goblin, with Christopher Donahue as Nursemaid, John Gregorio as Rat, and Adeoye as Tin Soldier. Original music for The Steadfast Tin Soldier is composed by Ensemble Member Andre Pluess and Amanda Dehnert. Musicians include Shramen Ghosh (Conductor/Piano), Juan Horie (Cello), Pascal Innocenti (Violin), Dalia Chin (Flutes) and Constance Volk (Flutes).

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story about a little tin soldier who never gives up, this gorgeous spectacle of music and movement is a classic the whole family will treasure! About the Artists
Mary Zimmerman (she/her/hers) (Creator and Director; Lookingglass Ensemble Member) is an Ensemble Member of Lookingglass Theater, an Artistic Associate of the Goodman Theatre, and a professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University. Her work with Lookingglass includes Metamorphoses (for which she won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Direction), Argonautika, The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, The Secret in the Wings, S/M: A Dream Biography, Treasure Island, and the site-specific Eleven Rooms of Proust. At the Goodman, her work includes directing and adapting The Journey to the West, Silk, Jungle Book, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, Candide, Galileo, Galilei and directing Wonderful Town and The Music Man. These and other works have been performed at Berkeley Repertory, Second Stage, The Princeton and McCarter Theaters, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and many other regional theaters; and they have been produced and directed by others nationally and internationally. She also directs opera, including five productions at the Metropolitan in New York and La Scala in Milan. She is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. This season her Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci is touring to The Shakespeare Theater of DC and The Old Globe in San Diego. Among all the shows she has been involved with, The Steadfast Tin Soldier ranks high among her most favorite.

Kasey sings with bands Babelon 5, Nasty Buoy, Old Timey, and This Must be the Band. She has created and directed over forty original works in Chicago and produces a monthly talk show called Kasey Foster Presents. Anthony Irons (he/him/his) (Goblin; Lookingglass Ensemble Member) is an actor, writer, director, and Ensemble Member of Lookingglass Theatre and Congo Square Theatre. Lookingglass credits include The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Act(s) of God, and Treasure Island. He also wrote and directed Regal Promise, a fantasy video, as part of Lookingglass Theatre's 50 Wards: A Civic Mosaic project. Anthony has performed with Goodman Theatre, Court Theatre, Shattered Globe, American Theatre Company, and The Second City. He's received Black Theatre Alliance Awards, African American Arts Alliance, three Jeff Award nominations, and a 3 Arts Make a Wave Award. TV/Film credits include Chicago Fire, Southside, Empire, and Let's Go to Prison. Anthony is also the creator, director for Hit ‘Em On The Blackside, Congo Square's YouTube comedy series.
Dalia Chin (she/her/hers) (Flutist) Born in Costa Rica, currently calling Chicago home. A sound explorer who primarily uses flutes for explorations to intuitively create music.
Chin believes in forging deep connections between herself, collaborators, and the audience, often inviting community participation in the creation of her work. Collaboration and aesthetic variety form the foundation of Dalia as a soloist and chamber musician. Notable collaborations with composers include Julio Estrada, Stratis Minakakis, Bethany Younge, Mesias Maiguashca, Pablo Santiago Chin. As a chamber musician Dalia is a founding member of Fonema Ensemble and has performed as a guest with Eighth Blackbird, Fifth House, Fulcrum Point and Unsupervise, most recent theater work includes Sweeney Todd with Kokandy productions. After a comprehensive arts education as a child studying visual art, dance, theater and music, Dalia received music degrees from University of Costa Rica, Florida State University, and DePaul University studying with Maria Luisa Meneses, Eva Amsler, and Mary Stolper.
Shraman Ghosh (he/him/his) (Conductor, Pianist) is a music director, actor, and pianist currently located and working in Chicago. I’ve recently served as MD for the summer event SHAKESINGS!! (Chicago Shakespeare Theater) and 5 & Dime (American Music Theatre Project). I’ve also worked for numerous shows and events at Northwestern University (‘22), including the annual Waa-Mu Show and multiple productions put on by American Music Theatre Project. I’m so thankful and excited to the team and to Lookingglass Theatre Company for welcoming me in and granting me the pleasure of working on The Steadfast Tin Soldier!
Juan Horie (he/him/his) (Cellist) comes back to The Steadfast Tin Soldier after being part of it in 2019. He has also worked with Teatro Vista in The Abuelas. Juan is a Venezuelan/American cellist who was trained in Venezuela's SISTEMA. While studying in UNEARTE and Conservatorio Simon Bolivar, he was a member of the Teresa Carreño Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Simón Bolívar Baroque Orchestra. His international engagements as member of the Teresa Carreño Youth Symphony Orchestra include playing at the Beethoven Fest, Salzburg Festspiele, Teatro Alla Scala of Milan, Berlin Philharmonie, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 2015, he won a chair in the cello section of the Teresa Carreño Symphony Orchestra.
Juan relocated to Chicago in 2017 where he is an avid performer of new music, a member of the renowned Ensemble Dal Niente, and is paired with violist Sixto Franco to form the Quijote Duo, a Viola-Cello duo that is gaining traction in the new music scene. Juan is also a member of Fifth Wave Collective. In October of 2022, he began performing at Symphony Center with members of the Chicago Symphony, in the first MusicNow series concert of the season.
A firm believer and activist of social change through music, he serves as a board member for Chicago Arts and Music Project (CAMP), and teaches cello at Midwest Young Artist Conservatory in the Young Music Scholars Program.
Pascal Innocenti (he/him/his) (Violinist) is a violinist and founder of the Innocenti Strings. Mr. Innocenti is a former member of Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Originally from Monaco (Monte Carlo), his French accent will still be one of his best assets :) He won first prize at the Conservatoire de Reuil Paris and a Master of Music in Violin Performance at the University of Cincinnati (CCM). After earning a Gold Medal in Chamber Music at the Conservatoire de Music d Orcay Competition, he was invited to perform at the Aspen Music Festival where he fell in love with America. Praised by the Chicago Tribune as having a "reverent" style of playing, he can go on and on telling you how legit he is with his violin, but you just would have to hear it for yourself.
Constance Volk (she/her/hers) (Flutist) is a musician, a painter, and an illustrator. She is a founding member of Ensemble Dal Niente, with whom she performs regularly. Constance is a member of Chicago Wind project and has collaborated with Alarm Will Sound, Fulcrum Point New Music Project, Ensemble Adapter, Eighth Blackbird, the Grossman Ensemble and Lookingglass Theatre. She has exhibited paintings at Zhou B Art Center, Miller Beach Arts and Creative District, ArtPrize Grand Rapids, the Oak Park Art League, and Rendezvous Arts. Her illustrations are featured with Density Seeds, an offshoot of the Density 2036 solo flute repertoire project. Constance is the creator of Connie’s Characters, a series of mix and match coloring books full of wacky weirdos. Her paintings, poster art, coloring books and music can be found at constancevolk.com.
T.J. Gerckens (he/him/his) (Lighting Designer, USA 829) is pleased to return to The Lookingglass Theatre Company where he previously designed the premiere of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Blood Wedding, Treasure Island, The Old Curiosity Shop, The Arabian Nights, The Secret in the Wings, and Metamorphoses. Chicago designs include The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, Music Man, Wonderful Town, and The Jungle Book, White Snake, Candide, Pericles, The Odyssey, Galileo Galilei, and Journey to the West at the Goodman Theatre, and productions at The Court Theatre and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Other notable designs include recent revivals of Metamorphoses at Berkeley Repertory Theatre Guthrie Theater, The Odyssey at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Measure for Measure in Central Park Theater, Metamorphoses on and off Broadway, and The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci off Broadway. T.J.’s opera designs include the recent premiere of the Sarah Ruhl/Matt Aucoin Eurydice at the LA Opera and Metropolitan Opera, Rusalka, Lucia di Lammermoor and La Sonnambula for the Metropolitan Opera, and Lucia di Lammermoor at La Scala Opera House in Milan, Italy. He has received numerous honors for his lighting, including a New York’s Drama Desk Award, Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Award, the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award, and the L.A.’s Ovation Award. T.J. is the faculty lighting designer at Otterbein University.
Amanda A Herrmann (they/them/their) (Props Supervisor) Lookingglass credits include: The Steadfast Tin Soldier (both 2018 and 2019 production), Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Act(s) of God, 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas, Plantation!, Hard Times, Moby Dick, Beyond Caring, Mr. and Mrs. Pennyworth, and Life Sucks. Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi (she/her/hers) (Aerial/Circus Consultant, Lookingglass Ensemble Member) has been a company member of Lookingglass since 1999. She is a co-founder and the Artistic Director of The Actors Gymnasium, where she serves as master teacher, choreographer and director of The Professional Circus Training Program.
Lookingglass credits include: Lookingglass Alice, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Moby Dick, Icarus, The Little Prince, Thaddeus and Slocum: A Vaudeville Adventure, among others. Chicago Credits: Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
Sylvia has received four Joseph Jefferson Awards, is a recipient of the 3Arts Award for Design (2014) and the Award of Honor for Outstanding Contributions by the Illinois Theater Association (2015). Sylvia most recently received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Distinguished Achievement for her Aerial Acrobatic Choreography for Moby Dick at South Coast Repertory Theatre.
Her son Griffin is weeks away from graduating with a degree in engineering from UIUC.
Ana Kuzmanić (she/her/hers) (Costume Designer) is Yugoslav born designer for theatre and opera. She designs costumes on Broadway, nationwide and internationally (including Tony Award-winning August: Osage County Broadway run and international tours). Ana frequently collaborates with Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman, including Lookingglass Theatre productions of Treasure Island and Argonautika, as well as premieres of Eurydice at Los Angeles Opera and Metropolitan Opera. Her other Lookingglass Theatre credits include Manuscript Found in Saragossa, North China Lover, and Big Lake Big City. Ana's work has been exhibited in the People's Republic of China, Russian Federation, Mexico, as well as many other countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. Ana Kuzmanić's undergraduate degree from Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade is in fashion and performance design. Ana is an alumna of Northwestern University where she currently teaches courses in design, computer arts, and drawing/ creative process.
Tom Lee (he/him/his) (Puppet Designer) Born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Mililani, Hawai’i, Tom Lee is a director, designer and puppet artist based in New York & Chicago. Mr. Lee began his career at La MaMa Experimental Theater in New York with the encouragement of Ellen Stewart and, later, the St. Ann’s Warehouse Puppet Lab. His original puppet theater work includes Shank’s Mare (La MaMa, Japan Tour), Hoplite Diary (St. Ann’s, La MaMa), Punch of the Dead (St. Ann’s Puppet Lab) Odysseus and Ajax (La MaMa) and Ko’olau (La MaMa/Hawai’i tour). Mr. Lee has directed & designed puppetry for Giants Are Small with the New York Philharmonic, the Prototype Festival production of The Scarlet Ibis by Stefan Weisman and David Cote and for the National Asian American Theatre Company, among others. Mr. Lee collaborated with director Stephen Earnhart on a multimedia staging of Haruki Murakami’s The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, for which he designed the scenery, puppetry and projected puppet miniatures. This production was featured at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2011 and the Singapore Arts Festival in 2012.
Todd Rosenthal (he/him/his) (Scenic Designer) recently designed 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas and Treasure Island at Lookingglass. Regional work includes: Steppenwolf Theatre Company (28 productions), Goodman Theatre (Creative Partner), Guthrie Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and many others. Off-Broadway credits include: Red Light Winter (Barrow Street Theatre), Domesticated (Lincoln Center), and Qualms (Playwrights Horizons). Broadway credits include: August: Osage County (Tony Award), The Motherfucker with the Hat (Tony Award Nomination), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Of Mice and Men (Filmed by National Theater Live), This is Our Youth, Fish in the Dark, and Straight White Men. Todd was also a designer for six years at Big Apple Circus. International credits: August: Osage County (London; Australia), The Beauty Queen of Leenane (Ireland), Nice Fish (London), Downstate (London), and Madame Butterfly (Dublin). Museum exhibitions include: Mythbusters: The Explosive Exposition and The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes.. Awards include: Laurence Olivier, Helen Hayes, Ovation, Back Stage Garland, Jeff, San Francisco Bay Area Outer Critics Circle, and Michael Merritt. Todd is a professor at Northwestern University and a graduate of Yale School of Drama.
Isaac Schoepp (he/him/his) (Circus Rigging Director) specializes in safely and creatively flying people and things. Previous rigging design credits at Lookingglass include: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas, Hard Times, and Moby Dick (Jeff Award-Artistic Specialization); Isaac is a proud Associate Artist with The Actors Gymnasium and serves as their staff rigging specialist. Isaac has provided rigging design and consultation for Chicago area theatres including The Actors Gymnasium, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Northwestern University, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The House Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and Porchlight Music Theatre. Regionally Isaac’s work has been seen at Alliance Theatre, Arena Stage, South Coast Repertory, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, and The American Vicarious. He has also appeared onstage with Lookingglass, The Actors Gymnasium, and The Back Room Shakespeare Project, among others. Blair Thomas (he/him/his) (Puppet Designer) is a puppeteer and director/designer who has been working in Chicago for the past 30 years. Blair is delighted to work with Lookingglass again. His first puppet show as an adult artist, staged as a late-night performance at the Edge of the Lookingglass space in 1989, became You Hold My Heart Between Your Teeth, the first production of Redmoon Theater, which he co-founded, directed and co-directed until 1998. At the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, he has staged Pierrot Lunaire (2006), The Ox-Herder’s Tale (2008) and Moby Dick (2016). Blair previously designed puppets for Lookingglass’ Mr. and Mrs. Pennyworth. He is the founder and artistic director of the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival.
Tracy Walsh (she/her/hers) (Dance Choreographer; Lookingglass Ensemble Member) is an Ensemble Member of Lookingglass Theatre Company where she has choreographed, appeared in and directed many productions including: The Old Curiosity Shop (Director), Acts of God, Blood Wedding, Around the World in 80 Days (Choreography), and The North China Lover (Actor/choreographer). Most recently, she choreographed dances for all productions of The Steadfast Tin Soldier and appeared in Her Honor Jane Byrne (Lookingglass). She was Movement Consultant for The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci (Goodman Theatre/Shakespeare Theatre Company) and was also an original cast member (Goodman Theatre/Seattle Repertory Theatre/Lincoln Center). She choreographed and appeared in Electra and Iphigenia in Aulis (Court Theatre/The Getty Villa) and choreographed Agamemnon (Court Theatre). She choreographed Don Giovanni and The Jewel Box (Chicago Opera Theatre) and directed, adapted & choreographed the recorded, live, original show All Wigged Out featuring musicians Marcy Marxer and Cathy Fink.

Lookingglass Theatre Company’s mission is to make theatre exhilarating, inspirational, and accessible to all. Throughout the run of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, we will be offering a number of shows and services to accommodate our audience.
Lookingglass Theatre ground floor and balcony seats are accessible for all patrons who use a wheelchair or a scooter, or patrons who cannot walk stairs. Lightweight assistive listening devices are available for every performance at the box office free of charge. Large print programs are available in electronic form or hard copy at the box office. If you would like a copy in advance of your visit to the theatre, please call the box office.

About Lookingglass Theatre Company
Inventive. Collaborative. Transformative. Lookingglass Theatre Company, recipient of the 2011 Regional Theatre Tony Award, was founded in 1988 by eight Northwestern University students. Now in its 35th Season, Lookingglass is home to a multi-disciplined ensemble of artists who create story-centered theatrical work that is physical, aurally rich and visually metaphoric. The Company, located in Chicago’s landmark Water Tower Water Works, has staged 70 world premieres, received 161 Joseph Jefferson Award Nominations, and produced work all across the United States.
