You Asked, We Answered!
Question:Â I was watching a program about the Titanic, and it mentioned a boat named the Carpathia which was responsible saving the lives of most of the survivors. Can you tell me more about the Carpathia?
Answer: Sure! Aside from its role in rescuing Titanic survivors, here is some information on the Carpathia:
In WWI, the Carpathia served as an Allied transport. On July 17, 1918, it was struck by three torpedoes from a German U-boat and sank. Five people were killed; the rest of the passengers and crew were rescued by the HMS Snowdrop.
In 1999 the wreck of the Carpathia was discovered intact and lying upright at a depth of more than 500 feet.
We shortened this response to share in this newsletter, but you can find much more information on the Carpathia on our Encyclopedia Britannica database, which is free with your Full Access or Digital Access card!
