Ask a LibrarianQuestion: Is a cashew a fruit or a nut?

Answer: It depends on why you need to know!

As far as allergens go, cashews are considered tree nuts - they trigger the same allergies and are often processed on the same equipment.

However, cashews come from a fruit called cashew apples. The part we eat is the seed and does not meet the technical definition of a nut. You may see cashews referred to as drupes instead, for the part of the fruit that contains the seed.
