Chicago Fire FC forward Kei Kamara was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 7 following a two-goal performance in the 2-1 win against Minnesota United FC on Saturday at Soldier Field.
Kamara's goals both came in the first half on Saturday, and provided the difference in what was the team's first win at home of the 2023 season. The three points earned also propelled the Fire up the Eastern Conference standings, where they currently sit in sixth place.
In addition, the pair of goals moved Kamara even further up the all-time MLS scoring chart. His 142 career goals are just three behind former LA Galaxy and U.S. Men's National Team legend Landon Donovan's 145 in second place, while former San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski holds first place with 171.
The 38-year-old got things started on Saturday with an opportunistic finish in the 24th minute. After a sequence of rebounds pinged around the Minnesota 18-yard box, the ball at last landed at the feet of Kamara. After a touch, Kamara coolly tucked a left-footed finish inside the near post to put the Fire ahead 1-0.
Kamara's second goal then came in the 36th minute. On an inquisitive dribble into the attacking half, fullback Arnaud Souquet picked up his head and sent a curling pass into the Minnesota 18, where Kamara had shaken his defender and gone full-stretch to meet the ball with his head and expertly redirect it past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Kamara's three total goals this season currently lead the team in the category. He and the Fire will be back in action this Saturday night for a third-straight match at Soldier Field as they prepare to welcome the Philadelphia Union for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff. Tickets for the match can be purchased here. The match will be broadcast live on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+ and transmitted locally in Spanish on TUDN 1200 AM.
