From May 11th through May 17th, 2025, the Indiana State Police will observe National Police Week, a solemn period dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National Police Week centers on May 15th—Peace Officers Memorial Day—a time of national reflection. Since then, it has grown into a weeklong observance, uniting departments, families, and survivors in remembrance and purpose.
For the Indiana State Police, this week is not symbolic—it is personal. It is a time to remember those who gave everything in service to the people of Indiana and to renew the commitment to uphold the ideals they stood for: integrity, courage, and selfless duty.
“National Police Week is not about celebration—it’s about commitment,” said Lt. McKee, Lafayette District Commander. “We honor those who can no longer serve beside us by continuing the mission they swore to uphold. Their legacy lives on in every oath we take, every life we protect, and every sacrifice we make.”
To honor this week, the Indiana State Police holds a memorial service at every post across the state during the month of May. These ceremonies are a time for reflection, reverence, and recommitment to the mission.
This year’s theme—“Respect. Honor. Remember.”—captures the spirit of National Police Week. It is a call to remember, a time to reflect, and a reminder of the enduring legacy left by those who gave everything for the safety of others.
