I missed opening night but after I saw the show mid-run, I wanted to write this review and encourage all to see this lively production of “Guys and Dolls”. The storyline is simple, corny and fun. It’s the classic opposites attract spin with a couple of crises thrown in to get to a happy entertaining finish.
I always like to have a comparison to other productions or, in this case, the 1955 movie starring Brando and Sinatra. While the big screen has so many advantages including grand sets and re-shoots to perfection, this Music Theater Works stage production was just right.

The sets were simple and perfect. The singing and dancing were first rate. And the Music Theater Works Orchestra, conducted by Kevin Disch, was the element that sparked this musical. Frank Loesser wrote some great songs for “Guys and Dolls”. “Luck Be A Lady”, “If I were a Bell”, “Fugue for Tinhorns” (Can Do) and “A Bushel and A Peck”. The last one was a major pop chart hit of the 50’s.

Cecilia Lole, playing Sarah Brown; Jeffery Charles playing Sky Masterson; Callan Roberts playing Nathan Detroit, and Kristin Brintnall, playing Ms. Adelaide… were all delightful. I took special note, however, of Adam Raso playing ‘Harry The Horse’. This big guy could dance and sing with the best of them. His mannerisms, and understated acting were so charming. I was particularly taken back by the “Havana Orchestra” and amazing dancing Both the men and the women knocked it out of the park in this dance scene.
“Guys and Dolls”, a production of Music Theater Works, Performing Arts Ctr., Skokie, IL. It is whole-heartedly recommended and plays through March 30. Visit www.MusicTheaterWorks.com for ticket availability and information on other productions.
