Lake Street’s East Wall Art Alley (located in the alley behind Lee Companies 563 S. Lake St.) is the epicenter of the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District’s biannual Lake Effectd wall art painting event. Lee Companies is proud to present the latest mural, an ohmage to the heroes of the first responders to the Covid pandemic. Celebrated local muralist Felix Maldonado’s vision is a powerful depiction of the firemen, police, and healthcare professionals who risked their lives for our safety and well-being. The mural was installed in the summer of 2020, but dedication was postponed due to CDC recommendations. Dedication will now take place on Friday, June 4th at 5:30 PM. Gary Mayor Jerome Prince, 1St District Councilman William Godwin, and representatives of each branch of Gary’s public safety team will be present.
At 6:00 pm The National Building will host a Grand Opening at 607 S. Lake St. The Grand Opening ceremony will be honored by the Major of Gary, Jerome Prince, to perform a ribbon cutting and emphasize how Lake Street has become a resurgent "Main Street" for Gary residents.
June 4 is also the kick-off of Miller Beach Lake Street Merchants’ First Fridays from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. There will be many activities including live music at The Nelson Algren 616 Sound Stage and an art opening at the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District featuring artist Lillian Attinasi. Lillian is celebrating 60 plus years as an artist with a retrospective exhibit featuring 40+ works across several genres including portraits, landscapes, surreal paintings, drawings, silk and wood block prints, collage enhanced photography, and repurposed materials. “A Cultural Bridge” will open with a reception from 6-8pm and will be available for viewing weekends through July 2 at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts 540 S. Lake Street.
