Community Healthcare System to host Stroke Awareness Month events in May

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To help educate the public on the importance of a quick response to symptoms, Community Healthcare System is hosting two educational events in May, which is National Stroke Awareness Month.

Stroke Symposium

The free Stroke Symposium is from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, May 3 at St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart. Topics at the event include:

·        8:30 a.m. – Stroke is an Emergency, presented by Lauren Rutili, DO, EMS medical director, St. Mary Medical Center

·        9 a.m. – Stroke: Always B.E.F.A.S.T., presented by Mark Simaga, MD, medical director, St. Mary Medical Center Stroke Center

·        10:15 a.m. – Innovations in Stroke Prevention, presented by Kais Yehyawi, MD, interventional cardiologist

·        11:15 a.m. – Get Your Plate in Shape Cooking Demonstration, presented by chef Ryan Smith

Stroke & Diabetes Awareness Fair

The free Stroke & Diabetes Awareness Fair is from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster. Topics at the event include:

·        8 a.m. – Stroke is an Emergency – Call 911, presented by Andrea DeLeo, DO, medical director, St. Catherine Hospital Stroke Center

·        9 a.m. – Stroke Alert – Immediate Care Awaits, presented by Mark Simaga, MD, medical director, St. Mary Medical Center Stroke Center

·        10 a.m. – Surgical Management of Stroke, presented by Aamir Badruddin, MD, medical director, Community Hospital Stroke Center

·        11 a.m. – Food for Thought, presented by Terri Sakaleris, registered dietitian, Community Hospital Diabetes Center

·        Noon – Managing Stroke Risk Factors, presented by Ender Akan, MD, medical director, Neurosciences, Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center

Both events offer hemoglobin A1C screenings and cholesterol testing. Fasting is recommended.
