THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion, the multifaceted contemporary art program located within Fashion Outlets Chicago, announces a new rotating exhibition featuring work by Paula Froehle, Jill King and artist duo Katrin Schnabl & Anne Guitteau, curated in partnership with the Evanston Art Center.  Floating Forms will fill THE COLLECTION’s three rotating exhibition cases with multidimensional pieces that examine themes of materiality, pushing the boundaries of sculptural forms. The exhibition will remain on view through February 27, 2020.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with the Fashion Outlets of Chicago’s contemporary art program THE COLLECTION in the exhibition, 'Floating Forms,'” said Evanston Art Center President and CEO Paula Danoff. “This exhibition has been such a creative process, we are looking forward to exposing sculptural works by four inspiring female artists to new audiences."

Paula Froehle is a film director, visual artist, educator and entrepreneur. As a visual artist she explores new approaches to traditional mediums, most recently blending portraits and stitching to create floating drawings. Froehle’s floating drawing are a tribute to, and meditation on, the traditional practice of mending, sewing, and embroidery—heralding practices historically deemed “woman’s work.” Froehle received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and her BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design.

Jill King

Jill King is an artist based in Evanston, Ill. who has exhibited in private and public spaces such as The Harris Theater, Chicago; The Garfield Park Conservatory, Chicago; Art Prize, Grand Rapids, MI; and The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago. King’s three-dimensional artworks begin by gesturally drawing with wire or steel rods, which are then formed by stretching an opaque fabric over these linear steel constructions. King’s organic sculptures highlight the glory and intricacy of the natural world while representing personal growth and transformation.

Artist duo Katrin Schnabl & Anne Guitteau explore the complex relationship between fashion, form and function, blurring the line between garment and sculpture in their collaborative work. Schnabl serves as an Associate Professor and Sage-Endowed Chair of Fashion in the Department of Fashion Design at SAIC, where she imbeds meaning into pattern-making techniques that inform much of the artist’s recent installation work. Guitteau is a knitwear designer and artist who has been featured in prominent fashion publications including Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, Elle Magazine and more for her combination of traditional techniques with alternative materials.
