Cleve Carney Museum of Art Announces Emerging Artists Selected for Upcoming Exhibition

Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA), located on the College of DuPage campus (425 Fawell Blvd.), announces the 17 jury-selected artists that will be featured in the museum’s upcoming exhibition, Once: 2023 Emerging Artists Exhibit. In the first iteration of this concept since 2018, the exhibit showcases contemporary artwork ranging in mediums, size, concept and technique from emerging artists across the nation. This exhibition is anopportunity for a range of artists at the beginning of their careers to display their artwork in a professional museum setting and reach new audiences. The exhibition will be on view beginning Oct. 7, following this summer’s blockbuster WARHOL Exhibition at the museum. Admission to the Once: Emerging Artist Exhibit is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view through Jan. 7, 2024.

The 17 artists selected to be featured include:  

  • Zac Benson (Texas): Multi-media sculpture  
  • Maria Burundarena (Ill.): Multi-media
  • Alejandra Carrillo (Ind.): Screenprint
  • Teri Carson (Ill.):  Print media, fiber, and installation  
  • Lindsy Davis (Tenn.): Sculpture
  • Seonyoung Lee (Ill.): Multi-media installation
  • Ambrin Ling (Ore.): Multi-media, watercolor
  • Christopher Miñán Fitzgerald (Texas): Painting  
  • Jessica Gispert (Fla.): Wax, metallurgy and photochemistry
  • Beihua Guo (Calif.): Photography  
  • James Hosking (Ill.): Photography and collage  
  • Sarah Leuchtner (Ill.): Multi-media drawing
  • Jonathan Sanchez Noa (N.Y.):  Multi-media sculpture
  • Rivers Qinnan (Ill.): Multi-media installation
  • Jerad Ragland (Utah): Photography  
  • Corey De'Juan Sherrard Jr (Texas): Music and multi-media  
  • Dylan Yarbrough (Ill.): Photography  

Three featured artists will be selected to receive $500 awards for outstanding submissions and one artist will receive a $1,500 award for “Best in Show.” The awards will be determined by the panel of jurors and be based on the artwork's quality of execution, conceptual clarity as well as its relevance to contemporary art and society. The award recipients will be announced at the opening reception Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.

“This exhibition provides early career artists from the community and beyond the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional setting and to have it seen by our audience,” says Cleve Carney Museum Gallery Director and Curator Justin Witte. “While the museum is focused on bringing world class exhibitions to DuPage County, we are also committed to being a platform for artists to grow their careers.” 

Several Chicago-based artists have been selected. James Hosking is also the recipient of a 2023 Individual Artists Program grant from the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Contemporary artist Sarah Leuchtne draws inspiration the city and contemporary culture. Photographer, designer and artist Dylan Yarbrough teaches photography at Columbia College Chicago and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Multi-disciplinary artist and educator Teri Carson holds a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the University of Illinois Chicago. Maria Burundarena is a visual artist and educator who creates installations using large scale printed images, light projection and reflective materials.  

Once: 2023 Emerging Artists Exhibit is coordinated by Julia Walker, Assistant Curator at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art. The four jurors that have reviewed the artwork alongside Walker and Witte include: Pritika Chowdhry, visual artist, curator at the South Asia Institute and member of the Board of Directors of the Women Made Gallery; Orianna Cacchione, Assistant Museum Director at the University of California, Santa Barbara; Jonathan Michael Castillo, Chicago-based visual artist and educator: Kasia Houlihan, multi-media artist and independent curator. 

Related Events and Programming 

An opening reception will take place Saturday, Oct. 7, 5-7p.m. The award recipients will be announced at 6 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

About the Cleve Carney Museum of Art  
The late Cleve Carney provided a significant legacy gift to establish the Cleve Carney Art Gallery at College of DuPage. The gallery opened in February 2014 with its inaugural exhibition, Selections from Cleve Carney’s Art Collection. In fall 2019, the gallery was expanded to a 2,500 square-foot museum. The Cleve Carney Museum of Art opened June 2021 with the highly anticipated Frida Kahlo: Timeless exhibition. Funding is provided by the Cleve Carney Endowment Fund, which supports vital programming including artist engagement opportunities for community members and students, gallery exhibitions, artist commissions, new acquisitions and other teaching and learning tools that foster cultural enrichment in our community.
