Chicago Street Theatre in Valparaiso Is excited to announce its long awaited summer production of Heathers the Musical is opening this Friday, June 11. The show is based on the Daniel Waters 80’s cult classic film of the same name and centers around Veronica Sawyer, played by Peyton Tinder (Beecher, IL), as she navigates the trials and tribulations of high school in Sherwood Ohio.
The Heathers, played by Michaela McGarel, Mara Manoski, and Madison Marsh, all residents of Crown Point, are a trio of vicious vixens who rule the school until one day, a brooding Jason Dean or JD for short, played by Tyler Mills (Griffith), shows up and shakes up the high school hierarchy.
The musical was written by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy and played Off Broadway in 2014 at New World Stages. Since its Off Broadway debut the musical has premiered in London, Australia, and Brazil.
After being delayed one year due to the COVID pandemic, director Mike Glorioso is thrilled to have this dark comedy back on the stage. “The show is a perfect blend of funny and drama,” says Glorioso. For people who have seen the movie, they will love hearing all their favorite and memorable quotes sprinkled throughout the show. And for those that have never heard of the cult classic film, this show will be an experience like no other.
Chicago Street Theatre opened earlier this year to limited audiences and masked performers with Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. Due to recent regulation changes, Chicago Street is excited to open its house to full capacity. Audience members are still asked to wear a mask while in the theatre because of lack of social distancing, however, the cast is fully vaccinated and will be performing without masks.
Heathers the Musical runs June 11th through June 27th. This production portrays some serious themes such as death, drinking, suicide, and sexual themes and is best for mature audiences.
