Chicago Fire FC will formally introduce Young Designated Player, winger Jairo Torres on Tuesday, May 3 before traveling to Atlanta United FC on Saturday, May 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Beginning at 2:00 p.m. CT, the Fire will hold a press conference with Torres, Technical Director Sebastian Pelzer and Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson for media members to attend in-person in downtown Chicago. Media members unable to attend the press conference in-person may participate virtually by registering here.
Torres, 21, climbed the Academy ranks at Atlas before making his professional debut with the club on Nov. 19, 2016, at just 16-years-old. In the 2022 Liga MX Clausura season, Torres started all 15 matches in which he played. His goal in the 1-1 tie against UANL Tigres on Saturday, his final match before joining the Fire, was enough to secure Atlas one of the top three spots in the table heading into the Liga MX Clausura playoffs. In the 2021 Liga MX Apertura season, Torres started 20 of the 21 games in which he played, including all six games in the Liga MX playoffs, during which the team advanced past Monterrey and UNAM Pumas before coming from behind to defeat León in the two-leg final to capture its first Liga MX championship in 70 years.
Chicago (2-3-4, 10) travels to face Atlanta United after falling 2-1 to the New York Red Bulls at Soldier Field in a match that included a lengthy weather delay, two penalty kicks and two ejections on Saturday night. Atlanta (3-4-2, 11 points) will host the Fire after falling 2-1 to CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on Saturday night, with Marcelino Moreno scoring the lone goal for the Five Stripes. Kickoff is set or 5:00 p.m. CT and the match will be broadcast live on WGN-TV, CF97 Live and transmitted locally in Spanish on TUDN 1200AM.
It will be the ninth encounter between the two teams, and the first in 2022. The teams split the spoils in 2021, with Atlanta winning 3-1 at home on April 24, 2021 before falling to Chicago 3-0 on July 3, 2021 at Soldier Field.
